An extremely popular series of recital where children from all over Toronto have the opportunity to play on a beautiful grand piano for friends and family.  Memorization not required.  A fun, supportive environment Cost:$20.

ORMTA Central Toronto Branch: Fall Scholarship Auditions

The Ontario Music Teachers Association holds two scholarship auditions each year.  Students play up to three pieces during an audition.  An audition is a performance opportunity where the student plays for an adjudicator and receives marks and comments.  Memorization is required for the student to advance to the scholarship recital where students with the highest mark can win scholarship prizes ($50.00-$150.00).  A great opportunity for those who want to experience a more rigorous performance experience or who are motivated by competition. Cost: $35-$45.

Contemporary Showcase Toronto

Once a year a week-long music festival is organized. Applications are accepted from the beginning of September until October 15. Performers enjoy feedback from expert adjudicators in a non-competitive environment.  Students may perform from memory or with a book.  A performance space is also provided for one evening in December, where a small selection of performers are invited to perform for an audience. The evening is capped off by the presentation of awards to a number of performers, to encourage their ongoing pursuit of music.  The emphasis of this event is collaboration not competition. Cost: $30.

Kiwanis Music Festival

Students participate in master classes.  Students prepare pieces to perform in front of fellow students, parents, and an adjudicator.  They receive comments and a mark. Cost:$25-45.

RCM Piano Examinations

Held by the Royal Conservatory of Music, these exams test repertoire, etudes, and musicianship (including technique, ear training, and sight-reading) of students.  They may be taken in-person or on-line.  Theory co-requisites must be taken starting in Grade 5.  Exams need not be taken every year, students may “skip” a year and still complete the following year. Cost: prices vary.
