Curriculum

All lesson plans are based on the Royal Conservatory of Music syllabus. Whether a student is learning purely for pleasure or to complete RCM exams, the following aspects will be integrated into each student’s lesson plan.

The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program provides a comprehensive curriculum that includes a variety of repertoire, technique, musicianship, musical literacy, and artistry. Students can choose to play simply for personal enjoyment, or to work towards RCM exams, music festivals, or some other goal. Regardless of focus, RCM components are worked into every student’s learning plan. Exams do not have to be completed consecutively (i.e. a student may choose to complete a level 5 exam without having completed a level 4 exam).

Repertoire

• Choose from a variety of styles and periods through RCM books
• Explore a recently diversified selection of composers in the updated RCM syllabus
• Choose favourite pieces through Teacher’s choice and Own Choice selections (e.g. play a Star Wars theme for part of your RCM exam!)

Technique

Technique includes scales, chords, arpeggios, patterns, and etudes. Each level of technique is designed to support the demands of the repertoire at that level.

Musical Literacy

• Theory and music history are introduced to support the repertoire being studied at each level
• Learn to read lead-sheets (abbreviated formats for popular songs so that you can play hit favourites on the fly!)
• “How to practice” tips are taught to aid in the ease and enjoyment of learning

Included in the Monthly Fee is:

• A highly personalized lesson plan and practice notes 
• On-going support via text, email, including mini-video check-ins 
• Access to all non-competitive performance opportunities (workshops, recitals, etc.) run by ORMTA Central Toronto Branch as well as organized by myself 

Competitive recitals/festivals and exams will be an extra fee and are completely optional.

Scholarships offered by ORMTA Central Toronto Branch can be a great incentive for these opportunities!

High school credits are offered by Ontario for Level 7 & 8 exam completion.
